Squat counter
Prop up your phone, step back and squat. This free squat counter counts every rep out loud, ignores the ones that don’t go deep enough and checks your form as you go: depth, knees, back and heels. It works for bodyweight, goblet and barbell squats, right in your browser.

How to use it
- Open the coach and press Start training. Allow the camera when your browser asks.
- Prop your phone at about hip height, 2 to 3 metres away, with your whole body in the frame. Turn side-on to check your depth, back and heels, or face it to check your knees.
- Stand tall and hold still for a second.
- Squat. The coach recognises squats on your first rep, which already counts, then calls out every rep after it. Press Finish set to see your count and form score.
What counts as a squat
The coach measures the angle of your thighs: upright when you’re standing, level with the floor at parallel. A rep counts when you sit down well past a quarter squat and then stand all the way back up.
- Too shallow: a quarter squat or a quick bob doesn’t count, and the coach tells you to go deeper.
- Above parallel: the rep counts, but it’s flagged, so you can work towards thighs parallel to the floor.
- Not standing tall: finish each rep with your hips and knees straight, or it’s flagged.
Side-on or facing the camera?
Each view shows different things, so choose the one for what you want to check, or do a set of each.
- Side-on is best for depth, your chest dropping, your back rounding and your heels lifting.
- Facing the camera is best for knees caving in and shifting your weight to one side.
- At an angle works too, and still catches your knees caving in.
Squats with weights
The counter tracks your body, not the weight, so goblet squats, dumbbell squats and barbell back squats count the same way. With a barbell, make sure the plates don’t hide your hips and knees from the camera: side-on usually works best.
How many squats should you do?
Two or three sets of 10 to 20 good bodyweight squats is a great start. Read how many squats to do a day for a plan by level, or try the 30-day squat challenge.
What the coach checks
- Knees caving in. Keep your knees tracking over your toes — push them out as you squat.
- Back rounding. Brace your core and keep your chest up so your spine stays neutral.
- Chest dropping. Keep your torso more upright — roughly parallel to your shins at the bottom.
- Heels lifting. Keep your whole foot planted; sit your hips back and push through your heels.
- Shifting to one side. Keep your hips centered between your feet as you squat.
- Above parallel. Aim to get your thighs parallel to the floor at the bottom.
- Too shallow. Squat until your thighs are at least near parallel so the rep counts.
- Not standing tall. Finish each rep standing fully upright with hips and knees extended.
- Dropping too fast. Take about a second or two on the way down to stay in control.

Questions and answers
Does it count half squats?
No. A rep has to go well past a quarter squat to count, and the coach tells you when one was too shallow. Reps that count but stay above parallel are flagged, so you can work on your depth.
Can it check my squat form?
Yes. Besides depth, it checks for knees caving in, back rounding, your chest dropping, heels lifting, shifting to one side, not standing tall and dropping too fast, and tells you out loud the moment it sees one.
Where should I put my phone?
At about hip height, 2 to 3 metres away, with your whole body in view. Side-on to check depth and your back, facing it to check your knees.
Does it count jump squats?
Yes. Jump squats are recognised as their own exercise: the coach counts them and checks that you squat deep enough before each jump.
Is my video uploaded?
No. The tracking runs on your device: your video is never uploaded, recorded or stored, and you don't need an account.
