Sit-up counter

Lie down, put your phone on the floor beside you and go. This free sit-up counter counts every full sit-up out loud, so you can keep your eyes on the ceiling instead of a screen, and tells you when a rep doesn’t come all the way up.

How to use it

  1. Open the coach and press Start training. Allow the camera when your browser asks.
  2. Put your phone on the floor about 2 metres to your side, in landscape, so your head and feet are both in the frame.
  3. Lie on your back with your knees bent and your feet flat, and hold still for a second.
  4. Sit up. The coach recognises sit-ups on your first rep, which already counts, and calls out every rep after it. Press Finish set when you’re done.

What counts as a sit-up

The coach measures the angle between your back and the floor. A sit-up counts when you come up from lying flat to sitting nearly upright, with your chest close to your knees, and then lower back down.

Sit-ups or crunches?

A crunch only lifts your shoulder blades off the floor; a sit-up comes all the way up to sitting. The coach recognises both and counts each to its own standard, so you can do a set of crunches straight after your sit-ups.

Tips for an accurate count

How many sit-ups should you do?

Start with 2 or 3 sets of as many good sit-ups as you can, and add a couple each week. Sit-ups train your abs and hip flexors; for a stronger core all round, mix them with planks and leg raises.

Questions and answers

Does it count half sit-ups?

No. A rep counts when you sit up nearly upright. Stop halfway and the coach tells you it didn't count.

Can I use it for a one-minute sit-up test?

It counts your sit-ups but doesn't time a minute for you. Start a timer on another device or watch a clock, and press Finish set when the time is up.

Why aren’t my sit-ups being counted?

Check that the phone is on the floor to your side, in landscape, with your head and feet both in view. Facing the camera, it is hard to see how far you sit up.

Is my video uploaded?

No. The tracking runs on your device: your video is never uploaded, recorded or stored, and you don't need an account.

Ready? Prop up your phone.
