Pull-up counter
Hanging from a bar is no time to count. This free pull-up counter watches you through your phone camera and counts every pull-up and chin-up out loud, but only the ones where your chin clears the bar.

How to use it
- Open the coach and press Start training. Allow the camera when your browser asks.
- Put your phone about 3 metres in front of the bar, angled up so the bar and your feet are both in view. Lean it against something steady on the floor or a chair.
- Hang from the bar with straight arms and hold still for a second.
- Pull. The coach recognises pull-ups on your first rep, which already counts, and calls out every rep after it. Press Finish set when you’re done.
What counts as a pull-up
The coach measures how far your shoulders rise towards your hands, using the length of your arms as a ruler, so it works whatever your height. A rep counts when you pull your chin over the bar and lower back down to straight arms.
- Chin not over the bar: a rep that stops short doesn’t count.
- Not quite to the bar: nearly. It counts, but drive your elbows down a little further next time.
- Not hanging fully: lower until your arms are straight between reps.
- Swinging: filmed from the side, the coach calls out kipping too, so your back and arms do the work.
Pull-ups and chin-ups
Palms facing away (pull-ups) or towards you (chin-ups), wide grip or narrow: the counter counts them all the same way. Pull-ups with a resistance band for help count too.
Can’t do a pull-up yet?
- Slow negatives: jump or step up to the top, then lower yourself as slowly as you can. Three to five slow lowers, a few times a week.
- Band-assisted pull-ups: a resistance band looped over the bar takes some of your weight.
- Rows: bent-over rows build the same pulling muscles.

Questions and answers
Does it count chin-ups?
Yes. Chin-ups, pull-ups and neutral-grip pull-ups all count when your chin clears the bar.
Where do I put the phone for a doorway pull-up bar?
On the floor or a chair about 3 metres in front of the doorway, tilted up so the bar and your feet are both in view.
Does kipping count?
A rep counts when your chin clears the bar. Filmed side-on, the coach also calls out swinging, so you can keep your reps strict.
