Push-up counter
Put your phone on the floor, get into position and start pushing. This free push-up counter watches you through your camera, counts every push-up out loud, doesn’t count the ones that stop halfway and tells you the moment your hips sag. It runs in your browser, so there’s nothing to install.

How to use it
- Open the coach and press Start training. Allow the camera when your browser asks.
- Put your phone on the floor about 2 metres to your side, in landscape if you can, so your whole body from head to heels is in the frame.
- Get into a high plank with your arms straight and hold still for a second.
- Start your push-ups. The coach recognises them on your first rep, which already counts, and calls out every rep after it. Press Finish set when you’re done.
What counts as a push-up
A push-up counts when you lower yourself until your elbows bend to about 90 degrees, with your chest close to the floor, and then press back up until your arms are straight. The coach measures your elbow angle about 30 times a second, so it knows how low every rep went.
- Too shallow: stop well short of that depth and the rep doesn’t count. The coach says so straight away, so you can go lower on the next one.
- Not quite low enough: nearly there. The rep counts, but it’s flagged so you know to bring your chest a little closer to the floor.
- Hips sagging: the rep still counts, but sagging costs you form points and the coach tells you to tighten your core.
That keeps the count honest. The number at the end is the number of full push-ups you did, which is what you want for tracking progress or a push-up challenge.
Tips for an accurate count
- Side-on, on the floor. The counter needs to see you from the side: from the front it can’t judge your depth or your body line.
- Head to heels in view, with a little space around you. If your feet are cut off, move the phone further away.
- Good light from the front or above, not a bright window behind you.
- Fitted clothes. A baggy top hides your elbows and hips.
Knee push-ups count too
Not ready for full push-ups? Do them from your knees. The coach recognises knee push-ups as their own exercise, counts them the same way and checks that your hips stay in line. When you can do 3 sets of 12 to 15 clean knee push-ups, try a few from your toes. Your first push-up has a four-week plan to get there.
How many push-ups should you do?
If you’re starting out, 3 sets of as many clean reps as you can, with a minute or two of rest in between, is plenty. Add a rep or two each week. See how many push-ups to do a day for a plan by level.
What the coach checks
- Hips sagging. Brace your abs and squeeze your glutes to hold a straight line from head to heels.
- Hips too high. Drop your hips into a straight line with your shoulders and heels.
- Head dropping. Keep your head in line with your spine instead of letting it hang.
- Too shallow. Lower until your elbows reach about 90 degrees so the rep counts.
- Not quite low enough. Bring your chest to about a fist from the floor on every rep.
- Not locking out. Press all the way up until your arms are straight between reps.
- Dropping too fast. Lower yourself under control instead of dropping.

Questions and answers
How does the push-up counter know when I’ve done a rep?
It tracks 33 points on your body through your camera and measures the angle of your elbows. A rep counts when your elbows bend to about 90 degrees and then straighten again at the top.
Why didn’t my push-up count?
Usually it didn't go low enough, and the coach tells you when that happens. If none of your reps count, check that the phone is on the floor to your side and that your whole body, feet included, is in the frame.
Can I use it for a push-up test or challenge?
Yes. It counts every rep to the same standard, elbows to about 90 degrees and straight arms at the top, so your numbers compare from day to day. An official test may have its own rules, so check them first.
Does it work on iPhone?
Yes, in Safari on iOS 15 or later, and in Chrome, Samsung Internet, Firefox or Edge on Android. It works on a laptop with a webcam too, if the camera can see you from the side.
Is my video uploaded?
No. The tracking runs on your device: your video is never uploaded, recorded or stored, and you don't need an account.
Ready? Prop up your phone.
It's the same free AI coach for every exercise: it recognises what you're doing, counts out loud and tells you when your form slips.
